Plan of action

For the development of the former site of Forges de Clabecq in Vilvoorde a monitoring plan was drawn up. As first phase of the monitoring, pumping tests was carried out in 2014 to determine the permeability of the subsoil, in particular, the alluvial gravel. During this phase, monitoring wells were installed on the site for continuous monitoring of the groundwater. The monitoring of these wells was carried by Talboom Milieu. Based on the provided data, the groundwater model was calibrated and refined to estimate the groundwater flux to the river.

Pumping tests

Pumping tests were carried out in order to calibrate and refine the groundwater model. The results of the pumping tests were analysed by analytical methods. The observed variation in the groundwater levels indicates that the permeability of the gravel layer varies laterally and it decreases towards the eastern side of the site. This observation can be explained by the increased presence of sand towards east.

Groundwater model

The direction of the groundwater flow was calculated based on the refined groundwater model. The bellow presented figure shows that the groundwater flows away from the site by passing both the western and northern border of the site.
