A cooling pond
At Balen/Lommel, Nyrstar used a pond with an area of approximately 16 hectares to provide cooling to the production process. The requested cooling capacity, however, exceeded the potential of the pond. AGT was asked to re-dimension the cooling pond so that the cooling requirement can be fulfilled.
The Model
In first step, the flow and heat transport in the current cooling pond were calculated using finite element code of COMSOL. This showed that the heat exchange process is highly dependent on the outside temperature and that large part of the pond volume was not used in the original pond concept. A few improved pond concepts were developed and calculated. The energy exchange between atmosphere, soil and surface water was always taken into account.

ATES Chelsea Barracks Londen
'Chelsea Barracks' is an old military site occupying 5,18 ha in the City of Westminster close to the centre of London. The site is being redeveloped in several phases into an area with residential, commercial, healthcare and relaxation functions. An ATES system was installed between 2015-2018 for heating and cooling of the buildings. Upon completion, the installation will consist of 5 well pairs in the London Chalk Formation with an estimated flow rate of 153 m³/h, which makes it one of the largest ATES systems in the UK.
