Soil and groundwater remediation
AGT is recognized as type 2 soil remediation expert in Flanders. This means that AGT can perform all the tasks of a soil remediation expert. We can, among other things, deliver exploratory and descriptive soil investigations, soil remediation project, technical reports for earthmoving and execution of environmental guidance of soil remediation works. For complex groundwater pollutions, a numerical groundwater model is made.
Modelling dispersion of pollution in groundwater
There are 5 employees within AGT who are recognized by Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM) as a qualified person to use groundwater models and to interpret the results of the model. As part of a descriptive soil investigation or soil remediation, a numerical groundwater model is made up to examine the possible dispersion of a groundwater pollutant or to support a remediation concept.
Execution of an Exploratory Soil Investigation
After a preliminary study and a historical research of the activities on the site, drillings are executed and monitoring wells are placed. Analyses of soil and groundwater samples indicate the presence of soil contamination.
Execution of an Descriptive Soil Investigation
If an indication for the presence of soil contamination has been found during the exploratory soil investigation, the extent and severity of the soil contamination must be determined. Based on the results of the fieldwork, the vertical and lateral expansion of the contamination, the risk analysis and the history of the contamination, the necessity of a soil remediation is examined. If necessary, a groundwater model and/or solute transport model is made.
Soil Remediation Project
When soil remediation is required, a soil remediation project is set up which describes how the soil remediation will be carried out and reported. A soil remediation strategy is selected based on (among other things) the extent and severity of the contamination, soil and hydrological data, the requirements of the different remediation technique(s) and the present and future use of the site.
Guidance of precautionary measures, soil remediation work, final evaluation investigation and aftercare
The execution of any precautionary measures, soil remediation work, final evaluation investigation and any aftercare action must always be carried out under the supervision of a soil remediation expert. In practice the soil remediation expert makes sure that the soil remediation work is carried out in accordance with the applicable legislations, codes of good practice and the approved soil remediation project. If necessary, (binding) advice is given to the client and/or to the soil remediation company to adjust the soil remediation and to achieve an optimal result.
Advantages of an independent consultant
The costs of a soil remediation are often considerable. As an independent consultant without exclusive relations to a larger entity, we can search for the most cost-effective solution for field work and sample analysis. This ‘free-market’ position also allows us to work as subcontractor for other remediation consultants, to answer complicated, groundwater-related remediation questions.
Technical report of earthmoving
The primary aim of a technical report for earthmoving is to investigate the environmental quality of the excavated soil and to determine the usage of the earth hereby preventing the distribution of any soil contamination. Beside the systematic control of the earth, the suspect points and materials are sampled separately. The technical report includes the environmental quality of the earth displayed in a measurement table and on a plan with indication of quality zones.
