Dewatering advice for the Bonnefant project in Hasselt

New apartment building in Hasselt

A large apartment building with two underground floors will be constructed in the city centre of Hasselt. The existing buildings on the construction site will be partially or entirely demolished and/or replaced. Some of the existing foundations will be reinforced. Additionally, an encased affluent of the Demer river runs underneath the construction zone. A connecting passageway between two underground parking lots will be constructed underneath the encased stream.

Two scenarios

For the excavation and construction of the passageway underneath the encased stream two scenarios were presented with technical implementation. In the first scenario the passageway is hydraulically sealed off prior to excavation. In this scenario there is no need for dewatering. In the second scenario, construction dewatering takes place in an open excavation pit without walls sealing off the passageway. This scenario has been simulated in a numeric model using a combination of well points and deepwells. The natural groundwater flow was also taken into account. By comparing both scenarios, AGT provided two options to construct the passageway underneath the encased stream. Based on the scenario preferred by the client, the dewatering study was finalized and the legal permit has been obtained.
